SOP for Procedure for Operation and Cleaning of Vacuum Cleaner
1.0 Objective
To lay down a procedure for the proper operation and cleaning of the vacuum cleaner to ensure effective cleaning and prevent cross-contamination in pharmaceutical areas.
2.0 Scope
This SOP is applicable to all vacuum cleaners used in production, warehouse, and Quality Control areas.
3.0 Responsibility
- Operator/Housekeeping Staff: Operate and clean the vacuum cleaner as per SOP
- Production/QC Supervisor: Ensure proper usage
- Engineering/Maintenance: Maintenance and servicing of equipment
4.0 Accountability
- Department Head and QA Head shall be accountable for implementation of this SOP

6.0 Procedure
6.1 Pre-Operational Checks
- Ensure the vacuum cleaner is clean and free from previous residues
- Check power cable and plug for any damage
- Ensure dust collection bag/container is empty and properly fitted
- Check filters (HEPA, if applicable) are clean and intact
- Ensure proper labeling/status tag (Cleaned/Ready for Use)
6.2 Operation Procedure
- Connect the vacuum cleaner to the power supply
- Switch ON the machine
- Use appropriate attachments (nozzle/brush) based on area to be cleaned
- Start cleaning from clean area to relatively less clean area
- Avoid contact with wet surfaces unless the vacuum is designed for wet use
- Do not overfill the dust collection bag/container
- After completion, switch OFF the vacuum cleaner and unplug
6.3 Cleaning Procedure
6.3.1 External Cleaning
- Wipe the outer surface using a clean, dry or slightly damp lint-free cloth
- If required, use approved cleaning agent
6.3.2 Internal Cleaning
- Disconnect the power supply
- Remove dust bag/container carefully
- Dispose of collected waste as per waste disposal SOP
- Clean the dust container with dry cloth or wash (if washable type) and dry completely
- Remove and clean filters:
- Tap gently to remove dust or
- Wash (if washable) and dry thoroughly before reuse
6.3.3 Accessories Cleaning
- Clean hoses, nozzles, and attachments using brush or dry cloth
- Ensure no blockage is present
6.4 Reassembly
- Reassemble all parts properly after cleaning
- Ensure all components are dry before use
- Label the equipment as “Cleaned”
6.5 Storage
- Store vacuum cleaner in designated area
- Ensure it is covered to prevent dust accumulation
- Keep power cord properly wound
6.6 Precautions
- Do not operate with damaged cable or plug
- Do not use without filters or dust bag
- Avoid vacuuming hazardous or flammable materials
- Ensure proper PPE during cleaning
- Do not expose electrical parts to water
6.7 Breakdown and Maintenance
- Report any malfunction to Engineering department
- Do not use defective equipment
- Record maintenance activities
7.0 Frequency
- Cleaning after every use
- Preventive maintenance as per schedule
