PROCEDURE FOR OPERATION AND CALIBRATION OF SOUND LEVEL METER
PURPOSE: To lay down a procedure for the operation and calibration of the sound level meter to measure noise level.
SCOPE: This procedure is applicable for the Operation and calibration of the Sound Level meter which is used for Measuring Noise Levels. Sound level meter shall commonly be used in both plant & ID allocated in Relax unit-I
DEFINITION:
SOUND LEVEL METER: A sound level meter (SLM) is an instrument (commonly hand-held) that is designed to measure sound levels in a standardized way. It responds to sound in approximately the same way as the human ear and gives objective, reproducible measurements of sound pressure levels.
RESPONSIBILITY
QA Department Person: To use the instrument as per the defined procedure
OTHER RESOURCES: PROCESS VALIDATION
PROCEDURE
SAFETY/PRECAUTION/EHS
A calibrated instrument shall be used.
Operation procedure :
- Turn on the power button.
- Determine proper measuring range by selecting the “LEVEL” button by pressing with finger in upward side for increment limits & decrement side to minimize scale.
- The scale shall be in 10’s increment or decrement & can be adjusted in range from 30 to 130 dB.
- Hold the instrument in hand and point the microphone at working site/table or bench. The sound level shall be displayed on LCD screen in dB.
Replacement of battery :
- When the left corner of the LCD shows “”, it indicates a normal battery output of less than 6.5 V-7.5 V. it is necessary to replace the battery. However, in – spec. measurement may still be made for several hours after the LOW BATTERY INDICATOR appears before the instrument becomes inaccurate
- Slide the battery cover & tack the battery away from the battery compartment.
- Replace with a 9V battery and reinstate the cover.
Sound Limits:
- Limit of machine: Sound of equipment NMT 80dB.
- Limits of AHU/HVAC: Sound of AHU/HVAC NMT 80dB.
- Limits of DG Sets/Chiller: Sound of DG/Chiller/Compressor NMT 80dB
Frequency for calibration: Yearly (± 30 days) by outside Agency.
